Jan Van der Straet said John Stradanus

Pittore e disegnatore fiammingo, nasce nel 1523 a Bruges, nelle Fiandre, muore a Firenze l’11 febbraio 1605. La sua formazione artistica inizia nella bottega del padre, dal 1537 prosegue ad Anversa, presso il pittore Pieter Aertsen. Nel 1545 si iscrive alla Corporazione di San Luca, che accomunava i pittori di Anversa; appartengono a questo periodo, tra il 1550 e il 1553, i disegni per tappezzerie. Dal 1550 inizia a viaggiare in Europa: prima a Lione, dove opera presso C. De La Haye, poi in Italia, inizialmente a Venezia, dal 1545 a Firenze. E’ in Italia che muta il suo nome, italianizzandolo in Stradano. Trovò employment with the Grand Duke Cosimo I, working within the circle of Giorgio Vasari, working with this for decorating various rooms in the Palazzo Vecchio. As a result of this collaboration, we witnessed the spread of the ways of the Nordic tradition in Florentine Mannerism. He participated in the decoration of the studio of Francesco I in Palazzo Vecchio, with two panels, one of which is the famous "school of 'alchemy'. In the same palace took part in the decoration of several rooms in the apartments above Eleonora of Toledo, is certainly worth mentioning the Hall of Gualdrada. After these experiences, he went to Rome, where he worked with Francesco Salviati in the decoration of the Vatican Belvedere. Back in Florence drew cartoons for tapestries for many Palazzo Vecchio and the villa of Poggio a Caiano, from 1567 to 1577. In total it is estimated that more than 130 drawing cartoons for tapestries. In 1576 he made a trip to Naples.

Back in Antwerp from his long trip to Italy, I knew Stradano Philip Galle, gia 'a pupil of Hieronymus Cock and recently addicted to ' art of ' publishing. The two progettarano the publication of a series of hunting subjects, inspired by the tapestry of the villa at Poggio a Caiano. The Galle to ' beginning gave birth to a series of recordings with no number, which was followed by a second draft consists of the title page and 44 numbered plates. The luck of immediate ' convinced by the ' publisher to continue to work with the Pathway that was responsible for implementing the new designs with themes from hunting exotic and unusual. This new round was first published separately and later combined with the previous, forming the wide range of 104 tables, entitled "venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium, I fought." The series' dated between 1578 (the date on the title) and 1596. Similar to the tapestry of the villa at Poggio a Caiano, the ' work and' grouped by topics in three broad categories: land animals, d ' air and ' water. All ' start hunting scenes were written by the same Philip Galle who subsequently took other members of his family and several assistants such as Adriaen Collaert and Jan, and Theodor Galle and Cornelis Carolus de Mallery.
